Mentor & Tutor Qualifications

Mentor for a Single Mom

A Mentor comes alongside a Single Mom to offer friendship, advice, wisdom, experience, and information about sources of assistance.  Likely, a Single Mom seeking a Mentor will need direction with issues such as parenting, managing finances, and health and wellness.
Often times a Single Mom seeking a Mentor will also be needing advice on career advancement or other special topics.

Naturally, a Single Mom Mentor is a woman who will have life experience from which to draw for giving advice.  She must demonstrate good decision-making in her own life as evidenced by a record of being law-abiding, having no difficulties with substance abuse, and keeping herself in general good health.  She needs to be able to identify priorities and set goals in accordance with Biblical teachings.  She must have a heart to help, the patience to work through the process, and the willingness to persevere through problem solving with her Single Mom Mentee.

The Mentor commitment is for a minimum of 15 minutes per week, every week, for 6 months.

The Mentor onboarding process requires:

1) completing The Kids & Me Volunteer form

2) completing The Kids & Me Mentor Questionnaire

3) participation in a personal interview with TK&M personnel

4) a one-hour training session

Once a Mentor has been onboarded, The Kids & Me will seek to match the Mentor with a Single Mom Mentee who has similar interests and who could benefit from the Mentor's particular life experience and skills.

Mentor for a Youth

A Mentor for a Youth comes alongside the child of a Single Mom to offer friendship, advice, wisdom, experience, and information about sources of assistance.  Young people often need direction about how to steer the course of their lives,  how to make sense of what they hear and see in society, and how to discern a good path from a better path.  They occasionally may need help with conflict resolution or dealing with struggles in school.  The wisdom of an older voice can be invaluable to them.

Additionally, a Youth Mentor can bring new windows to a child's life with new ideas and new possibilities.  Social capital or gain through relationship and new circles of people is perhaps the most critical component of a mentorship.  A Youth with a Mentor who can introduce him to different elements of society and expose him to other ways of life has greatly multiplied potential.

A strong candidate for a Youth Mentor is an individual who demonstrates solid character and is able to lead as a role model.  This candidate has a sincere interest in positively influencing a youth and must be committed to carry through the length of the mentorship which is 1 hour every week for 6 months.

The Youth Mentor onboarding process requires:

1) completing The Kids & Me Volunteer form

2) completing The Kids & Me Mentor Questionnaire

3) participation in a personal interview with TK&M personnel

4) a background check

5) a one-hour training session

Once a Youth Mentor has been on boarded, The Kids & Me will seek to match the Mentor with a Youth Mentee/ child of a Single Mom to begin the mentorship.
